Dr. Matthew Harlan, DVM
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine · University of Tennessee, 2022
Dr. Harlan isn't just a veterinarian, he's the kind of person you want showing up when your animal needs help. Known for his calm presence, practical approach, and no-nonsense communication, he's deeply committed to doing what's best for the animal, the owner, and the outcome.
Biography
A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Dr. Harlan grew up surrounded by agriculture, strong values, and a close-knit family, which shaped both his work ethic and his belief in doing things the right way. He moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee, where he majored in Animal Science.
While at UT, Dr. Harlan was an active member of the agricultural fraternity Alpha Gamma Rho, serving in many leadership roles, including the honor of being named one of Smokey’s official handlers. As a handler, he cared for Smokey behind the scenes and led the beloved UT mascot onto the field each game day. That hands-on experience with high-pressure situations, animal behavior, and public responsibility set the stage for the veterinarian he is today.
“I never wanted to be anything other than a veterinarian. The joy I have every single day, I try to show through my care. Making people smile matters more than you may think, and one of the best ways to do that is by caring for animals the same way I'd care for my own. They mean so much to their families, and putting people and pets first over processes and profits is my goal.”
Outside the Clinic
Matthew is married to his wife Bailee, an East Tennessee native. They met in college while he served as a Smokey handler and she was a UT cheerleader. They have one son, two dogs (Stokley and Milo), and three cats (Mia, Oliver, and Binx).
Matthew is a huge sports fan, with a special love for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Tennessee Volunteers, and is slowly becoming a proud Carolina Hurricanes fan. When he's not working or with family, you'll probably find him on the golf course, watching a game, or out on the lake. He's proud to serve the community he calls home in Morristown.
